Why go
Jacob van Campen and Pieter Post designed this house in the 1630s and 1640s for John Maurice of Nassau-Siegen. It later became the home of the Royal Cabinet of Paintings. Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring and Rembrandt’s The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp are collection anchors, but the house itself also deserves attention. Look at its symmetrical exterior from the Hofvijver, then slow down in the galleries to study the paintings at close range.
What to look for
- Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring is a collection anchor.
- Rembrandt’s Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp rewards a slower look at its clustered figures.
- The symmetrical house was built for John Maurice of Nassau-Siegen.
Useful to know
- Allow time for both the paintings and a look at the house from the Hofvijver.
- Check the museum’s ticket arrangements before setting out.
