Completed in 1881, Mesdag’s panorama still stands in the building made for it, long after such paintings fell from fashion. Mesdag worked with his wife and other artists on the coastal scene. From the central platform, the painted sea, village and dunes wrap around you, while real sand and terrain hide the base of the image. Circle the platform slowly to compare details across the shoreline and notice how the foreground joins the painted view.
