Why go
The surviving palace remains, especially the octagonal part of the complex, show that Galerius's Thessaloniki extended beyond one famous arch. Stand in the square to read the contrast between Roman foundations and the modern neighbourhood, then follow the former ceremonial line northeast toward the Arch of Galerius and Rotunda.
What to look for
- Palace remains occupy part of the square's present-day setting.
- An octagonal section points to the complex's monumental scale.
- The arch and Rotunda continue the Galerius story beyond this area.
Useful to know
- Treat the square as an orientation point for the palace precinct, then continue to the arch and Rotunda.
- Look across the area rather than expecting the palace to survive as one complete building.
