Bank of Japan Head Office

Kingo Tatsuno's 1896 stone headquarters pairs monumental Meiji architecture with a guided route through the former banking hall, underground vault and domed exhibition rooms.

Bank of Japan Head Office

Why go

The tour connects architecture with the physical history of money. Heavy vault doors, formal counters and the domed center of the Main Building show how security and public authority shaped Japan's first modern national institution designed by a Japanese architect.

What to look for

  • Stand beneath the dome at the center of the historic Main Building.
  • Inspect the massive door and chambers of the former underground vault.
  • Compare the formal banking floor with Tatsuno's stone exterior.

The full story

The Bank of Japan was established in the early Meiji period as the country built a modern monetary system. Its present Main Building, completed in 1896, was designed by Kingo Tatsuno after study in Britain and work on other major public institutions. The stone exterior uses symmetry, columns and a central dome to project stability, while the plan organized banking operations around controlled circulation and secure storage. The building later survived the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake with damage and repairs, then continued to serve as the bank expanded around it. Its designation as an Important Cultural Property recognizes both the architecture and the institution it housed. The guided route makes that history tangible through the former banking floor, exhibition spaces and vault, revealing how monetary policy once depended on rooms, counters, documents and physical reserves as much as it does on abstract systems today.
