Why go
Sensoji turns a famous streetscape into a legible religious complex. Follow the route from Kaminarimon through Nakamise and Hozomon, then pause at the incense burner before the Main Hall. The sequence reveals how worship, neighborhood commerce and postwar reconstruction continue to share the same precinct.
What to look for
- Follow the axial approach from Kaminarimon to the Main Hall.
- Watch worshippers draw incense smoke toward themselves at the large burner.
- Compare the five-story pagoda with the broad copper roof of the Main Hall.
The full story
Sensoji traces its foundation legend to 628, when two fishermen are said to have recovered an image of Kannon from the Sumida River. The temple grew with Asakusa and became one of Edo's principal religious and entertainment centers. Much of the complex survived fires and the 1923 earthquake, but the air raid of March 1945 destroyed the Main Hall and other major buildings. Reconstruction after the war restored the ceremonial axis rather than attempting to conceal that rupture. The present Main Hall was completed in 1958, Kaminarimon returned in 1960, Hozomon in 1964 and the five-story pagoda in 1973. Those dates matter on the ground: the precinct looks traditional, yet its buildings embody a modern act of collective reconstruction. Incense, offerings and seasonal markets keep the site active as a place of worship rather than a static historical display.
Useful to know
- The precinct is accessible at all hours, but the Main Hall opens from 6:00, or 6:30 from October through March, until 17:00.
- Arrive early for a quieter approach through Nakamise and return after dark for the illuminated buildings.
