Why go
This was a private family setting within a former royal hunting reserve. The preserved apartment rooms offer a close view of nineteenth-century domestic life, while the surrounding park explains why the retreat stood apart from the courtly spectacle of Venaria. Visit for that contrast, with time allowed to reach the castle inside the broad park.
What to look for
- The royal apartment suite preserves furnished rooms linked to Victor Emmanuel II and Rosa Vercellana.
- Brick buildings form a historic complex within the park.
- The wooded setting separates the castle from nearby Reggia di Venaria.
The full story
Borgo Castello grew within the hunting landscape associated with the nearby Reggia di Venaria. Earlier buildings served the reserve, but the complex acquired its most distinctive role under Victor Emmanuel II in the nineteenth century. He enlarged it as a private residence connected with Rosa Vercellana and their family. The furnished Royal Apartments preserve that domestic chapter, offering a contrast with the public grandeur of the Savoy palaces. Brick courts and surrounding woodland make the castle feel part of La Mandria rather than an extension of Venaria’s formal rooms. The distinction matters when planning: a walk in the regional park, a look at the castle exterior and an interior visit are related but separate experiences. At Borgo Castello, the royal history is best understood through the family rooms and their position deep in the former reserve.
Useful to know
- Plan the route through La Mandria park before setting out for the castle.
- Check the official arrangements for the royal apartments if seeing the interiors is essential.
