Karatepe
Karatepe is an open-air Neo-Hittite fortress in the Taurus Mountains of Osmaniye Province. Its carved gates and bilingual inscription make the ruins unusually readable.
Walk the ancient gates to see lions, sphinxes and relief scenes of hunting, war and a boat. The inscription appears in Phoenician and Hieroglyphic Luwian and helped scholars decipher the latter script. The mountain setting adds a sense of why this fortified site controlled a passage through Cilicia.
What to look for
Two monumental gates carry carved scenes and guardian figures.
The bilingual inscription pairs Phoenician with Hieroglyphic Luwian.
The fortress overlooks a strategic Taurus Mountains passage.
Useful to know
Allow time to walk between the gates and read the reliefs, not just view the entrance.
Prepare for an outdoor archaeological visit in the mountains.
