Malatya
Malatya is an eastern Anatolian city whose ancient story is spread across Arslantepe and Battalgazi. The historical sites sit beyond the modern center.
Ancient Meliddu and Melitene are more than former names: they point to settlements that shifted around today’s Malatya. Arslantepe preserves evidence of a much earlier regional center, while Battalgazi recalls the city’s later location. Visiting them together makes the geography of that long history easier to understand.
What to look for
Arslantepe preserves remains of a Bronze Age regional center.
Battalgazi marks an older location of Malatya.
Stone lion and ruler sculptures were found at Arslantepe.
Useful to know
Plan separate travel to Arslantepe and Battalgazi from the modern center.
Check current site access before building a day around archaeological remains.
