Why go
The ruins near Çanakkale connect a real settlement mound with the world of Homer's Iliad. Excavations revealed repeated rebuilding, so no single set of walls represents all of Troy. The site is most rewarding when you follow the different phases and keep the ancient landscape toward the Dardanelles in view.
What to look for
- Successive building layers show how the city changed over time.
- The hill at Hisarlık sits inland from the Dardanelles.
- Later Greek and Roman remains share the site with much older settlement traces.
Useful to know
- Allow time to read the site interpretation; the visible remains span different periods.
- Pair the ruins with Mount Ida if you want to explore the wider landscape of the Troy stories.
- Check current access before travelling from Çanakkale.
