What to Drink in Turkey
Tea, Turkish coffee, ayran and seasonal drinks offer a quick introduction to everyday food culture. Knowing a few names makes café and meal choices easier.
Çay is tea, while Turkish coffee arrives in a small cup with grounds that settle at the bottom. Ayran is a savoury yoghurt drink that suits a meal. In cooler weather, look for thick boza or warm, cinnamon-topped salep. Rakı is an anise-flavoured spirit commonly diluted with water.
Useful to know
Order Turkish coffee sade for no sugar, orta şekerli for some, or şekerli for a sweeter cup.
Let coffee grounds settle and leave the last sip in the cup.
Ask for gazoz if you mean a fizzy soft drink; soda can mean mineral water.
