The fortress stands where the strait narrows, which makes its position as important as its masonry. Walk the grounds to compare the towers and the water below, and treat the steep site as a separate excursion from central Sultanahmet. Its open setting gives the visit a different rhythm from Istanbul's enclosed monuments.
