Arezzo’s Main Sights

Piazza Grande ties together Arezzo’s civic buildings and Romanesque church; San Francesco and the cathedral take the visit into painting and sacred art. Give the square and each interior distinct attention.

Arezzo’s Main Sights

Why go

The sloping red-brick piazza has the apse of Santa Maria della Pieve, the Fraternita dei Laici and Vasari’s long loggia in one view. Indoors, Piero della Francesca’s True Cross cycle and the cathedral’s Magdalene fresco reveal why Arezzo matters beyond its streetscape.

What to look for

  • Piazza Grande combines red brick, pale stone lines, a church apse and Vasari’s loggia.
  • Santa Maria della Pieve has tiers of small arches and varied columns.
  • The cathedral holds Piero della Francesca’s Magdalene; San Francesco holds his True Cross cycle.

The full story

Piazza Grande once served as Arezzo’s market. Its slope and irregular edges make the different building campaigns easy to see. The apse of Santa Maria della Pieve rises above one side; along the square, the Fraternita dei Laici combines a Gothic lower level with a later Renaissance upper storey. Vasari’s loggia gives the opposite edge a more unified face. From the square, turn to the Pieve’s west front to see rows of small arches carried by columns that do not all match. Its medieval sculpture and later changes reward a slow look. The cathedral of Saint Donatus shows another phase of Arezzo: Gothic space, stained glass and a fresco of Mary Magdalene by Piero della Francesca. San Francesco houses his larger True Cross cycle in the Bacci Chapel. These are separate interiors with different emphases; together they let you compare a civic square, Romanesque carving, Gothic architecture and Renaissance painting within one city.

Useful to know

  • Use Piazza Grande as an outdoor starting point before choosing church interiors.
  • Check entry arrangements for San Francesco’s frescoes separately from a general centre walk.
