Prato

Prato combines a medieval centre with a textile city and contemporary art scene. It deserves its own urban visit for visitors interested in Tuscany beyond the familiar Renaissance circuit.

Prato

Why go

The cathedral, Santa Maria delle Carceri and old streets sit alongside a history of mills, merchants and modern industry. The Textile Museum and contemporary art district broaden the day beyond churches, giving Prato a distinct urban character near Florence. Cantucci, the local almond biscuits, add another link to Prato’s working traditions.

What to look for

  • Santa Maria delle Carceri has a Greek-cross plan by Giuliano da Sangallo.
  • The historic centre preserves medieval civic and religious architecture.
  • The Textile Museum connects the city to its long cloth-making economy.

The full story

Prato's textile history is much older than its modern factories. In the Middle Ages, water from the Bisenzio helped power cloth production, and trade gave the city wealth enough to expand its walls. The merchant Francesco Datini's surviving papers now offer an rich record of late medieval business. Religious and civic buildings grew within that commercial setting. Santa Maria delle Carceri, commissioned by Lorenzo de' Medici and designed by Giuliano da Sangallo, adds a later Renaissance layer; its central Greek-cross plan contrasts with the older fabric around it. Textile work continued to define Prato into the modern era, while migration changed its social and industrial life. The Textile Museum makes that economic continuity easier to grasp, and contemporary art gives a different way to read the city's present. Prato is most rewarding when the visit connects these chapters. The medieval centre, a Renaissance church and the textile story belong to one evolving city, rather than separate attractions gathered near Florence.

Useful to know
