Santa Giulia, Lucca
Santa Giulia is a small brick church whose blind arcades and deep-set portal show Lucca moving from Romanesque toward Gothic forms. It rewards a short architectural pause.
Why go
The façade has more to say than its modest scale suggests. Its layered brickwork records a medieval rebuilding, while the church’s older roots and later interior changes make it a compact example of Lucca’s long religious history. The portal provides a particularly clear transition between the styles.
What to look for
Blind arcades articulate the brick façade.
A splayed portal mixes Romanesque and Gothic details.
The upper façade belongs to a later building phase.
Useful to know
Inspect the front as part of a walk through central Lucca.
Check current opening before planning to view the interior.
