Santa Maria delle Grazie, Arezzo

At Arezzo’s Santa Maria delle Grazie sanctuary, a Renaissance portico frames a late Gothic church and a devotional image linked to the site’s older spring.

Santa Maria delle Grazie, Arezzo

Why go

The visit brings together several layers in a compact setting: the former sacred spring, Parri di Spinello’s Madonna of Mercy, Andrea della Robbia’s altar and Benedetto da Maiano’s loggia. The contrast between Gothic church and Renaissance frontage is easy to see.

What to look for

  • Benedetto da Maiano’s arcaded loggia fronts the sanctuary.
  • Parri di Spinello’s Madonna of Mercy sits within a della Robbia altar.
  • The chapel of San Bernardino stands beside the church.

The full story

The sanctuary stands where an older spring, later called Fonte Tecta, had long been treated as a sacred place. In the fifteenth century, Bernardino of Siena pressed for the site to become a Christian oratory. Parri di Spinello painted a Madonna of Mercy for it, and Andrea della Robbia later provided the altar that still frames the image. The church built around this devotional focus keeps late Gothic forms, while Benedetto da Maiano’s arcaded portico and loggia belong to the Renaissance. Walk the frontage before entering: its regular arches give one impression, and the church behind them tells an earlier architectural story. The chapel dedicated to Bernardino adds a reminder of the person associated with the site’s transformation. These layers make the sanctuary more than a single artwork or an attractive facade; they show how a place of worship was reinterpreted over time.

Useful to know

  • Use the Arezzo sanctuary at Via Santa Maria delle Grazie 1 when planning the visit.
  • Sightseeing pauses during religious celebrations; check the parish before a time-critical trip.
