Start by choosing what you want to spend time looking at. Ancient sculpture, church paintings and painted papal rooms ask for different kinds of attention. The map helps you locate each branch, while the routes give you a smaller set of things to follow.

Choose your kind of looking

The sculpture visit stays with bodies, fragments and the museum settings of the Pio Clementino. The Pinacoteca visit follows six paintings from the Stefaneschi Triptych to Caravaggio's Deposition. Three Raphael altarpieces share Room VIII, so you can compare them without changing rooms. The painted-palace visit follows whole wall programmes and the popes who commissioned them.

Leave room for the approach

The collections occupy different levels. The ancient collections and Pinacoteca appear on the first floor of the museum map, with the upper galleries and Raphael Rooms on the second. The Sistine Chapel is on the first floor. Follow current collection signs and ask staff about lifts for the floor you need. Walking between sectors and pausing in a courtyard both take part of your visit.

Prepare the chapel outside

Read the Sistine preparation before entering. Carry three observations with you, the paired side-wall stories, the Genesis ceiling and the later Last Judgement. Inside, remain silent and put your phone away.
