How to read a wall covered in frescoes
Read a painted room by following the relationships between its walls and ceiling.

Find the room’s subjects
Begin with the large groups and the main action on each wall. Ancient thinkers occupy the School of Athens. The Sacrament anchors the Disputation. Raphael's arrangement gives each subject its own setting within a larger programme. Once you recognize that relationship, you can return to a face, a book or a gesture without losing the room's overall plan.
Separate the layers of time
The Sistine Chapel's paired stories of Moses and Christ were painted before Michelangelo's ceiling and later altar wall. Reading the scenes along a wall follows sacred history. Comparing their dates follows the changing decoration of the building. Prepare that distinction outside the chapel, then look silently with your phone away.
Remember who used the room
The Room of the Fire in the Borgo served a tribunal under Julius II and a dining-room use under Leo X. Its sixteenth-century scenes use earlier papal events within a later pope's commission. A date in the story and a date of painting can be centuries apart. The patron and the room's use help explain why that older story was chosen.
