The Stefaneschi Triptych was made for old St Peter's. Bernini's working models relate to the chair monument in the apse of the present basilica. Objects in the museum therefore connect you with two different chapters of the church's history.

From altar to gallery

The triptych's original purpose belonged to old St Peter's, the church that preceded the present basilica. Seeing it in the Pinacoteca changes its surroundings. Its church commission remains part of the work's story even though you encounter it among paintings from other places.

From model to monument

Bernini's clay models concern figures made for St Peter's Chair. Bernini and his assistants built that monument in marble, stucco and gilded bronze between 1658 and 1666. The models and the finished setting let you connect studio decisions with a large commission elsewhere in the Vatican.

Keep the visits distinct

St Peter's Basilica has its own access arrangements, with separate conditions for products such as the Dome, Treasury and Necropolis. Plan those through the basilica's visit information. Follow museum exit signs for the museum visit. Do not plan on a general visitor shortcut from the Sistine Chapel into the basilica or on returning through the museums afterwards.
