A collection's founding place can differ from the building where you encounter it. The Lateran Apostolic Palace is a separate site in Rome, yet its name appears in the history of several Vatican collections. Following those moves helps make sense of the museum names.

Collections that moved

The Gregoriano Profano was founded at the Lateran in 1844. The Pius-Christian collection followed there in 1854. Both moved into the Vatican museum complex during the twentieth century. Their Lateran origins describe an earlier chapter, rather than a direction to leave the Vatican to find their present displays.

The historical collection

The main display of the Vatican historical collection at the Lateran Apostolic Palace remains a satellite site. The Carriage Pavilion occupies another setting, beneath the Square Garden in Vatican City. A shared subject or institutional history does not put these displays in the same building.

Plan around the actual site

Use the museum map for collections within the Vatican complex. Treat a visit to the Lateran Apostolic Palace as a separate plan with its own access conditions. The collection's name alone cannot tell you which entrance or admission applies.
