Room XVII is used for temporary exhibitions. One of them brought Perugino’s Resurrection of Christ into public view from 28 June to 15 September 2023. That painting had been made in 1499 for San Francesco al Prato in Perugia, then moved through several very different settings. French forces removed it in 1797. After its return in 1815, it entered papal collections, and Paul VI later chose it for his private library. The 2023 exhibition gave museum visitors a temporary opportunity to see a work associated with that private setting. The room’s changing displays can focus attention on a work’s history as well as its appearance. The Perugino exhibition belongs to that past programme, with its own dates and purpose.
