The Square Garden gives you a pause within the museum visit. Use the open space to choose what deserves the next part of your time, whether that is a group of paintings or another collection. Two museum histories meet around this garden. The Pinacoteca was built in the nineteenth-century garden area and opened in 1932, giving paintings a permanent building of their own. Beneath the Square Garden, the Carriage Pavilion holds vehicles associated with papal travel and ceremony. The garden is part of the admitted museum itinerary. Its name appears on the museum plan as Giardino Quadrato, a useful reference when finding the collections around it.
