The full story
Roman Verona prospered where major routes crossed the Adige, and its street grid still links the Arena, Porta Borsari and the former forum at Piazza delle Erbe. After late-antique and Lombard rule, the medieval commune gave way to the Della Scala family. Their fourteenth-century power survives most vividly at Castelvecchio, Ponte Scaligero and the Scaliger Tombs. Venetian rule brought another architectural language, including monumental defenses designed for firearms and gates such as Porta Palio. Later Austrian works expanded the fortified landscape again. Rather than memorize the sequence, use it to compare structures: Roman arches, Romanesque churches, Gothic dynastic monuments and Renaissance military classicism all remain within a relatively small walking area. The Adige remains the constant reference, shaping crossings, defenses and the compact relationship among the surviving monuments.
