Choosing a visit that fits your day

Choose a palace visit, a garden walk or an afternoon at Trianon. Leave space in the day for walking between them.

Versailles includes several visits across a large estate. The Palace, the formal gardens and the Trianon sites have different entrances and ticket conditions. Decide which visit matters most before adding another part of the domain.

For a first palace visit

Allow 90–150 minutes for the seven-stop palace route, plus the entrance queue. It follows the State Apartments and the Queen’s Apartment, with a public view into the chapel. Private apartments, entry to the chapel nave and the Royal Opera belong to separate visits. Reserve the Palace entry time, including when you qualify for free admission. Enter through the access named on the booking. If you need a lift, ask the Palace team for the route to the State Apartments.

For gardens or Trianon

The central-axis garden walk ends beside the Grand Canal. Its return to the palace is uphill and additional. The grove visit is seasonal and follows the days when the enclosures are open. Fountain water effects have their own programme. Choose the Grand Trianon for the low marble residence and its flower garden. Choose the Petit Trianon–Hamlet visit for a smaller house followed by a longer outdoor walk. Trianon opens later than the main palace. A Palace-only ticket does not cover every visit in the estate.

Match the visit to the terrain

The palace has stairs and level changes. The Petit Trianon route uses the staircase before entering its garden. Outdoor visits include slopes and long paths, which may be gravel. Ask the entrance team for the access arrangement you need. Large luggage is not allowed in the estate. Plan breaks around the visitor services on the route. A visit to the interiors followed by every garden and both Trianon palaces leaves little time to stop and look.
