Look up at the vessels and precious objects painted around the vault. This room stood before Louis XIV’s collection room, where he showed selected visitors gems, medals and silver. During evening gatherings, guests could take coffee, wine and liqueurs here. The painted wealth above them echoed objects the king kept nearby. Find the ship-shaped vessel over the doorway. A vessel of that kind held the king’s napkin at ceremonial meals, and people passing it were expected to salute.
