The Corinthian columns divide a room first used as a bedchamber by Louis XIV. During Napoleon’s reign, it was split into a smaller bedroom and an adjoining sitting room for his wife, Empress Marie-Louise. The carved wall decoration preserves the earlier setting around that later arrangement.
Marie-Louise selected much of the furniture. The bed has a different history. It stood in Napoleon’s bedroom at the Tuileries Palace in Paris, and King Louis XVIII died in it in 1824. It was brought to the Grand Trianon during the reign of Louis-Philippe.
