French Garden
Straight paths and symmetrical beds preserve the earlier formal garden beside the Petit Trianon, with Gabriel’s pavilion at its centre.

The French Garden places a pavilion among regular beds and straight paths. Ange-Jacques Gabriel, the architect who later completed the Petit Trianon, designed its garden buildings for Louis XV. Seen from this side, the palace’s four columns and garden steps address an already ordered landscape.
Marie-Antoinette kept this formal garden while changing areas farther away into winding paths, rocks and water. The French Garden also lies on the connection towards the Grand Trianon, rather than on a separate journey outside the estate.
