The clock and balcony of the Marble Courtyard locate this bedchamber from outside. Louis XIV adopted the room in 1701, giving his sleeping chamber a position at the centre of the palace facade. Court ceremonies around his rising and retiring brought admitted visitors into a setting that was also his bedroom.
The king died here in 1715. This room is separate from the ceremonial bedroom called Mercury in the State Apartment. The first-palace route follows the State Apartments and Hall of Mirrors, while the bedchamber’s central position can be understood from the courtyard.
