The State Apartment’s former guard room has Mars on the ceiling and military motifs around the cornice.

Look for helmets and other military headgear in the decoration near the ceiling. This room was the king’s guard room, and its subject is Mars, the Roman god of war. Claude Audran painted him riding a chariot drawn by wolves in the centre of the ceiling. Other scenes celebrate victories and rulers from antiquity. Guards once controlled the approach here, while the decoration presented military power overhead.
