Petit Trianon Main Dining Room
Carved fruit and vegetables frame the Main Dining Room. Meals arrived from service rooms below. A mechanical table system proposed for the nearby Small Dining Room was never installed.

Look for the fruit and vegetables carved into the wall decoration. They suit a room made for dining and connect its interior with the gardens outside. Paintings commissioned by Louis XV add scenes of activities such as harvesting and hunting.
Food came from kitchens outside the palace and passed through preparation rooms on the lower floor. In the nearby Small Dining Room, Louis XV considered tables that could rise through the floor already laid for a meal. The cost led him to abandon that plan. The Main Dining Room and the smaller dining room nearby belonged to a household that still required cooks and servants, even when the king wanted a more limited gathering.
