Look at the marble wall panels and the paintings above them. This room retains the seventeenth-century decoration of the queen’s apartment. Twelve guards served here day and night, controlling entry from the Queen’s Staircase. In the historical approach, visitors passed them before reaching the antechambers and bedroom. The present main visitor circuit runs in the opposite direction, so this guarded threshold comes near the end of the apartment visit.
