Queen’s Hamlet Mill
The wheel helped create the appearance of a working village, while this cottage served the queen’s leisure estate.

The wheel beside the cottage makes the building recognisable as a mill. It was decorative. This part of the Hamlet belonged to the reception and leisure group, alongside the boudoir and Queen’s House. Other buildings across the stream served real agricultural work.
The architect Richard Mique arranged the village around an artificial lake for Marie-Antoinette. The mill stands near the start of the lakeside walk. Its present form also owes much to later restoration after damage and alteration following the Revolution.
