The historical approach led from the Queen’s Guard Room through the Royal Table Antechamber and the Nobles’ Room to the bedchamber. Each room brought an admitted visitor closer to the queen. The main visitor circuit now passes through the sequence in the opposite direction after the Hall of Mirrors.
The bedroom combines changes made by successive queens and later reconstructions of furniture and fabrics. In the Guard Room, the marble wall decoration preserves much more of the seventeenth-century setting. On 6 October 1789, attackers reached this part of the palace and the queen escaped towards the king’s rooms through her private chambers. Those smaller rooms formed a separate group behind the public apartment.
