Imagine the company gathered around a royal meal. The king and members of the royal family dined, while other people watched from stools or stood according to rank. The ceremony took place in this antechamber of the queen’s apartment. Louis XIV observed it almost every evening. Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette ate publicly here once a week, and the queen asked for music during the meal. Eating in public made an ordinary part of the day into something the court could witness.
