Arriving in Washington by Air

Washington is served by Reagan National, Dulles and Baltimore/Washington airports; the best choice depends on ground transport and final destination, not airfare alone.

Arriving in Washington by Air

Why go

Reagan National sits closest to the monumental core and has a direct rail connection. Dulles lies far west in Virginia but also connects to the Metro network. Baltimore/Washington can offer useful flights, yet the transfer into Washington is longer and requires more planning, especially late in the day.

The full story

Airport codes conceal three very different arrivals. DCA places you beside the Potomac in Virginia, close enough that the approach can reveal the Mall and river. IAD is the region’s major long-haul gateway, farther from central Washington but linked by rail. BWI sits north near Baltimore and often works best when its flight schedule or fare offsets the longer transfer. Match the airport to where you are staying: a Virginia destination can make one option more logical, while a late arrival with luggage may change the value of a theoretically direct connection. Build a buffer around immigration, baggage and the final train rather than comparing scheduled flight times alone. For a morning departure, reverse the calculation and include terminal walking and security. The closest runway is not automatically the fastest choice, but neither is a cheaper distant flight once ground travel and sleep are counted.

Useful to know

  • Compare total door-to-door time and ground cost before choosing among the three airports.
  • For Dulles or Baltimore/Washington, check the last feasible train connection if your flight arrives late.
  • Use the airport’s official ground-transport information after landing, since construction and pickup zones can change.
