From the Washington, D.C. World / Places
John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts
Washington’s principal performing-arts complex combines major stages with free public spaces, broad Potomac views and the contemporary REACH extension beside the river.
Why go
A ticketed performance is only one way to experience the Kennedy Center. The immense marble halls show the ceremonial ambition of a national cultural institution, while terraces open toward the river and monuments. The REACH adds more informal rehearsal, exhibition and gathering spaces, making the complex easier to explore outside showtime.
What to look for
The river terrace’s broad Potomac and Georgetown views
Grand foyers connecting the Concert Hall, Opera House and Eisenhower Theater
The REACH’s curved pavilions and more open relationship to the landscape
Useful to know
Check the official calendar for free performances as well as ticketed events.
Use the free shuttle from Foggy Bottom when operating, or follow the signed pedestrian route from Metro.
Arrive early enough to walk the terrace; it is a substantial part of the visit, especially near sunset.
