M Street in Georgetown

Georgetown’s crowded commercial spine is useful for orientation and historic façades, though visitors should navigate to central Georgetown instead of trusting the associated map pin.

M Street in Georgetown

Why go

M Street works best as a seam rather than a destination: buses, shops and restaurants animate a corridor lined with buildings at the scale of the old port town. Look above modern storefronts for brickwork, cornices and narrow property lines, then leave the traffic behind by turning toward the canal, waterfront or residential streets.

What to look for

  • Historic brick façades surviving above contemporary shopfronts
  • A direct east–west line through Georgetown’s commercial core
  • Quick access to the C&O Canal, Old Stone House and quieter side streets

Useful to know

  • Navigate to central Georgetown rather than relying on the associated map pin, which does not identify the district reliably.
  • Sidewalks become congested on weekends; visit early or use parallel streets for a calmer walk.
  • There is no Georgetown Metro station, so plan a bus, bicycle, rideshare or walk from Foggy Bottom.
