Oak Hill Cemetery Chapel
James Renwick Jr.’s small Gothic Revival chapel sits inside a romantic hillside cemetery, where architecture, landscape and Washington biography reward a contemplative walk.
Why go
The chapel is modest in size but unusually rich in setting. Built of local stone with pointed arches and a steep roof, it appears among terraced paths, old trees and elaborate monuments above Rock Creek. The surrounding cemetery holds figures from 19th-century political, artistic and civic life, making the walk as significant as the building.
What to look for
A compact 1850s Gothic Revival design by Smithsonian architect James Renwick Jr.
Picturesque terraces and ravines shaped around the natural slope

Useful to know
Confirm current cemetery hours and chapel access before visiting; seeing the interior should not be assumed.
Wear stable shoes for steep paths and uneven surfaces, especially after rain.
Keep the visit quiet and yield to funerals or mourners; Oak Hill remains an active cemetery.
