Why go
Old Town provides the urban texture central Washington largely lacks: narrow brick houses, former warehouses, churches and commercial buildings remain part of an active small city. King Street supplies the main axis, but the quieter cross streets and Potomac waterfront reveal more. Focus on the historic district here; the Masonic memorial stands separately near the Metro.
What to look for
- King Street’s long descent from the Metro toward the Potomac waterfront
- Brick row houses and civic buildings from Alexandria’s early port history
- The Torpedo Factory Art Center in a converted waterfront industrial building
Useful to know
- Use King Street-Old Town Metro, then walk or take the local trolley toward the waterfront.
- The George Washington Masonic National Memorial is a separate landmark near the Metro, not on the waterfront.
- Allow half a day for side streets and the riverfront rather than limiting the visit to King Street shops.
