From the Yangon World / Places
Kaba Aye Pagoda
Kaba Aye Pagoda and the neighboring Maha Pasana Cave form a Buddhist council site north of central Yangon. Visit for the relationship between the shrine and its purpose-built assembly space.
Prime Minister U Nu commissioned the pagoda and cave in preparation for the Sixth Buddhist Council of 1954–56. The Maha Pasana Cave was conceived as a counterpart to the cave associated with the first council in India. Seeing both places together makes the mid-twentieth-century religious project clearer than treating the pagoda as an isolated monument.
