Maha Wizaya Pagoda
Immediately south of Shwedagon, Maha Wizaya Pagoda is a later Buddhist monument with its own ritual setting. It suits a short companion stop when you are already near Shwedagon's southern side.
Built in 1980 on Dhammarakhita Hill, this pagoda marks a modern chapter in Yangon's religious landscape. It commemorated a gathering of Buddhist monastic orders that shaped the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee. Its closeness to Shwedagon invites a comparison between a long-standing pilgrimage landmark and a much newer shrine, while each remains an active place of worship.
