Why go
Ride if you are confident in urban traffic and have a route beyond the dense Old Town. Lake paths and some riverside sections can be pleasant, while university slopes demand effort. Watch tram rails, follow signed cycling rules and do not assume pedestrian lanes permit bikes.
The full story
Zurich distances are often cycle-friendly, yet the street environment requires attention. Tram tracks can catch a wheel when crossed at a shallow angle, and central junctions mix rails, cars, buses and pedestrians. The Old Townʼs narrow lanes are better walked when crowded. Flatter routes follow parts of the lake and river, while climbs toward ETH, the university and Zürichberg increase effort quickly. Rental systems and availability change, so check the current operator before relying on a bike for a timed connection. Use designated parking and secure the bicycle properly. A helmet and lights improve safety even where not legally required for every rider. If you are not comfortable with tracks or busy traffic, combine walking in the center with trams for longer trips.
