Why go
Understanding the transport role prevents two mistakes: treating Zurich only as an airport stop, or overloading a short stay with distant excursions. The center rewards walking, while the zoo, gardens and other cities need deliberate rail or tram time. Keep one day centered on Zurich before looking outward.
The full story
Zurich Hauptbahnhof is one of the countryʼs main rail junctions, and the airport has a direct rail connection to the city. That makes Zurich a natural starting point for wider travel, but the same convenience can tempt visitors to spend every day elsewhere. The Old Town begins within walking distance of the station. The Limmat leads south toward the lake, while Bahnhofstrasse provides a parallel route through the commercial center. Trams handle steeper or more distant journeys, including the university slopes and zoo. Regional trains make Winterthur and nearby historic towns realistic excursions; Lucerne, Bern, Interlaken and Geneva demand progressively more time. A balanced plan gives central Zurich a full walking day, reserves a separate block for a major museum or zoo, and chooses no more than one distant city for any single day.
