Trains Around Zurich

S-Bahn and regional trains make the main station a practical base for the airport, nearby towns and longer Swiss day trips.

Trains Around Zurich

Why go

Use trains when the journey crosses the city or leaves it. Stadelhofen serves the east side and lake area, while Hauptbahnhof provides the widest connections. Check final destination, platform and ticket zones in the official planner; several services may reach the same stop differently.

The full story

Zurich Hauptbahnhof is the main rail hub, but it is not the only useful station. Stadelhofen provides quick access to the east bank, Opera House area and suburban lines. Enge serves the west side of the lake, and regional S-Bahn services connect outer neighborhoods with nearby towns. For day trips, direct trains can make Winterthur, Schaffhausen, Lucerne and Bern realistic, while Interlaken and Geneva require longer commitments. Swiss timetables are integrated across operators, so the official SBB planner is the best place to compare connections and disruptions. Read the trainʼs final destination as well as the intermediate stop, and confirm whether the ticket covers local transport at the far end. Leave margin when a mountain connection or last return matters.
