Why go
Use trams for clear movement across the center and buses when the destination sits away from a rail corridor. Stops display route direction, but the official planner is safer for disruptions and transfers. Tickets generally follow zones and time validity rather than a single ride.
The full story
Zurich trams run through Bahnhofstrasse, Paradeplatz, Central and the lake approaches, making them easy to understand from street level. Route numbers and destination names appear at stops and on vehicles. Buses connect areas where rails are less practical, including some hillside and outer-city links. The same integrated ticket can often cover both modes within its zones and validity period, so changing vehicles does not automatically require a new purchase. The important task is checking direction and destination before boarding, especially where several lines share tracks. Keep doorways clear and allow passengers to exit first. Service patterns, construction diversions and night routes change; use the official ZVV planner close to departure rather than relying on a printed route description. Walk short Old Town distances when that is simpler than transferring.
