Why go
District numbers matter only when they change a travel choice. Kreis 1 contains the historic core and Bahnhofstrasse; the east bank leads toward the Opera House and gardens; Zurich-West carries converted industrial spaces. Use names and landmarks first, then the Kreis number for transport or accommodation.
The full story
The historic city once occupied roughly the area now recognized as the Old Town. Later municipal expansions absorbed surrounding communities, creating twelve numbered districts, or Kreise. For a short visit, Kreis 1 matters most because it contains both banks of the Old Town, Bahnhofstrasse, Paradeplatz and the main river sights. East of the lake, Seefeld and Riesbach provide promenades, the Chinese Garden and access toward the university Botanical Garden. North and west of the center, former industrial areas have been reshaped around design, culture and large mixed-use complexes. The university and ETH occupy higher ground above the east bank, while the zoo sits farther out on the Zürichberg. Do not memorize every boundary. Use the Old Town, lake, Zurich-West and hillside institutions as planning zones, then check the exact neighborhood only when choosing a route or place to stay.
