Why go
Public transport becomes useful beyond the walkable Old Town, especially for the zoo, gardens, airport or regional excursions. Read the zone and time validity on the ticket, validate it when required, and keep it for inspection. Use the official journey planner for current routes.
The full story
Central Zurich is compact, but the wider network connects the airport, hillside neighborhoods, zoo, lake communities and surrounding towns. Trams handle many city journeys, buses fill gaps, and S-Bahn trains are faster across longer distances. Some lake and river boats participate in the same regional system, though supplements or different validity can apply. Tickets are based on zones and time rather than a single vehicle. A valid ticket may cover transfers among several modes, but only within its stated area and period. Buy before boarding when required and keep the ticket until the journey ends because inspections occur. Current fares, zones, platform changes and late services should come from ZVV or SBB. Walking remains best inside the Old Town; use the network for steep climbs and outlying attractions.
