Why go
San Fernando tells the story of a fort built for a conflict it never entered. Its bastions and towers are less monumental than Santa Bárbara, but the quieter setting makes the defensive plan easier to read and gives a different angle on Alicante’s two fortified hills.
What to look for
- Walls and towers preserve the outline of a fortress raised during the Peninsular War.
- The elevated site looks across the city towards Santa Bárbara Castle.
- The surrounding hill park softens the military architecture with open green space.
Useful to know
- Allow 45 to 60 minutes for the fort and viewpoints.
- Combine it with nearby Panteón de Quijano or the bullring district for a longer walk.
- Expect exposed paths and little shelter on hot or windy days.
