Santa Bárbara Castle
A large hilltop fortress combines Alicante's clearest city-and-sea panorama with layered military architecture, though reaching and exploring it takes more time than a quick viewpoint stop.
The castle gives both the broadest orientation over Alicante and the strongest physical link to the city's Muslim and later Christian history. Walls, towers, courtyards and rooms spread across Mount Benacantil, so the reward is not one monument but a sequence of defensive spaces above the bay.
What to look for
Trace walls and towers that preserve the fortress's Muslim-era origins and later rebuilding.
Use the summit terraces to read the old town, port, beach and bay in one view.
Courtyards and interior rooms break up the exposed walk across the upper fortress.
Useful to know
Set aside at least 90 minutes once inside; the extensive summit complex rewards an unhurried circuit.
Decide between the steep approach and the lift before setting out, and check current lift access separately.
Carry water and avoid the hottest part of the day because many ramparts and terraces are exposed.
