The full story
The IJ is both a waterway and a practical divide in Amsterdam's geography. Centraal Station stands on its southern shore, while Amsterdam Noord begins directly across the water. Public ferries make that crossing part of the city's everyday movement, carrying people on foot and by bicycle rather than functioning as a sightseeing cruise. Their value is clearest when a route continues into Noord or toward the wider Waterland area: the ferry replaces a long detour around the water with a short crossing. The view also changes how the city reads. From the deck, the station, waterfront and former docklands appear as parts of one working edge. Routes serve different northern landing points, so the useful choice is the one that matches the next destination rather than the first ferry leaving the quay. Check the operator's current route information before travel.
