Port of Amsterdam

Amsterdam's port explains how the city's old harbour grew into a large industrial system along the IJ and North Sea Canal, mostly beyond the visitor centre.

Port of Amsterdam

Why go

Read the port as the working counterpart to Amsterdam's canal scenery. Its route from the IJ to the North Sea, and onward to the Rhine, shows how medieval trade expanded into modern bulk transport across a much larger waterside landscape.

The full story

Port activity in Amsterdam began in the medieval settlement beside the IJ. By the seventeenth century, the harbour served the Dutch East India Company and helped connect the city's merchants to long-distance trade. Access to the sea remained a practical problem as ships grew larger. The North Holland Canal linked Amsterdam with Den Helder in the early nineteenth century, followed by the more direct North Sea Canal to IJmuiden later that century. Today the port extends westward across waterways, quays, rail lines, roads and industrial estates rather than occupying one compact basin. Named areas such as Westhaven, Petroleumhaven and Houthaven reveal the specialised work distributed along the water. The network also reaches inland: the IJ and IJmeer connect eastward, while the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal links the port with the Rhine system. From central Amsterdam, the useful insight is scale. Passenger quays near the city are only the eastern edge of a working port whose main industrial spaces spread far beyond the historic canal ring.
